Our Waterways are PreciousWhere do we start when singing the praises of our waterways? California creeks flow through our lives, past our homes, under roadways and over our cities, agricultural and wild lands. Our waterways give us drinking, living, playing and framing water. Healthy water supports healthy people and healthy communities. We benefit greatly from having clean, healthy waterways that are sources of quality water and wildlife habitat.
The City of Santa Rosa's roughly 40 square miles is home to more than 90 miles of creeks and 170,000 people. The City's impressive network of trails wind along many large and small creeks where people enjoy the sights and sounds of nature while walking, strolling and exercising along. The City's creeks are also home to a wide variety of California native plants, animals and insects. |
Our Creeks Need Much CareCalifornia creeks flow downhill past farms and rangelands, along and under streets and freeways, through our towns and our lives making their way to the Pacific Ocean. Flowing water over the land effectively and efficiently transports whatever is in its path. It is no wonder, then, that California creeks' health is challenged everyday by our every action (or in-action). Our creeks are also challenged with valdalism including graffiti and destruction of property along with homeless camps and dump sites.
Our busy lives include motor vehicles, product packaging, plastics of all kinds, fast food, electronics, and chemicals used in building materials, medication, cleaning, to eliminate pests, in preserving food and more. When our modern-day conveniences are not properly used or disposed of, they end up being transported into our waterways. |
